a fabric runner for chaxi
The chabu is the fabric one places upon the stage for tea.
It is the foundational base of the ceremony.
These come from the northern reaches of Vietnam, procured and made into chabu on my recent travels.
These particular chabu runners feature a double panel, which allows for a reversible feature. I decided to pair these runners with a double panel ribbon to allow for a vastly customisable chaxi.
Each are embroidered with a traditional marking of the indigenous Black H'Mong Tribe. This marking represents the 'fingerprint' of the H'Mong people, in conjunction with the land. On traditional garments and art, these fingerprints are stitched amongst other patterns that represent the nature that surrounds them. These pieces depict the harmony of the H'Mong people in accordance with nature- this very sentiments felt incredibly fitting to bridge into our world of tea.
These chabu are made from hemp and cotton produced and handwoven from scratch by our friend Ger, Mama Ti and their family of the Black H’mong tribe in Hau Thao village.
Hand dyed with local natural materials sourced from the land- including mud, yam, persimmon and an unidentified root besides bamboo clumps deep in the local forestland.
Each of these chabu runners have been handmade and dyed individually entirely from scratch through a lengthy manual modus, meaning each piece is unique and will vary slightly in texture, colour and make.
